A private hire driver has revealed that a second-hand 2004 Volvo V70 D5 SE, which he “took a chance on” six years ago, has become one of the most reliable vehicles he has even known, clocking up an astonishing 575,000 miles without a single breakdown.
Simon Marshall, 49, has clock up nearly a million kilometres in his trusty Swedish estate, the same distance as a journey to the moon and back.
Mr Marshall purchased the vehicle six years ago, when it already had an eye-watering 170,000 miles on the clock but he said he took a chance on it because it was so cheap.
He has since covered a further 415,000 miles in the car, spending just £3,000 in the process on minor repairs, servicing and replacing perishable items such as brake pads and tyres.
It has never left me stranded on the side of the motorway and I have every faith in it getting me from A to B safely.
Mr Marshall told The Telegraph: "I took a chance on the car, because it was a bargain and I never imagined I would get this many miles out of it.
"I have become very fond of it, and friends refer to it as my Viking Long Boat.
"It has never left me stranded on the side of the motorway and I have every faith in it getting me from A to B safely."
The car cost £5,500 to purchase used and it still boasts its original engine, exhaust, turbo, alternator and all four brake callipers. A new gearbox was required but the professional driver managed to pick up a used unit for just £800, which has since clocked up 400,000 miles.
He revealed that he covers about 100,000 miles per year, more than ten times that of an average motorist.
Mr Marshall added: “One of the things I enjoy is having a good quality car, without paying a fortune for it.
“I'm not in the business to be buying a Porsche but it doesn't matter because this car has never let me down and I don't want anything else.
“If someone wanted a lift to the South of France right now I would have no hesitation in going with this car. It is the most reliable vehicle I have ever known and I have put my complete faith in it.”
