Popping the big question can be a nerve-racking affair. You may have got the right ring, but the choice of venue is arguably just as critical.

After crashing his car into a tree, one motorist decided to seize the moment and propose to his girlfriend while they were sat in the back of a police car.

Caine Hutchings had been taking his girlfriend, Emile Dukeson, to the seaside for a romantic backdrop to him getting on one knee. However, while driving down the A39 near Shapwick, Dorset, he lost control of his Citroen hatchback, collided with the tree and ended up stuck in a ditch.

Luckily, neither of them was injured, though the shock of the accident was enough to spur Mr Hutchings into action.

The 30-year-old told the BBC: "We were only in the police car a short time but the accident had put everything in perspective, so I decided that I would ask there and then because anything can change in just a moment and I didn't want to wait any longer.

"We had to get a photo of me going down on one knee in front of the police car after we got to the pub or no-one would have believed what I'd done."

Luckily for him, his better half accepted his proposal, saying yes as they were driven away from the crash scene in a parked police patrol car.

Ms Dukeson, 27, said: "I didn't have a clue that was going to happen. As far as I was aware we were going to Blue Anchor to take the dogs for a walk.

"In the car Caine said 'did you really think we were going all that way just to walk the dogs?' and pulled the box [with the ring in it] out.”

The couple now plans to get married at some point next year. Avon and Somerset police have confirmed that no one is to be charged over the crash.
