The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has warned drivers across the country after a flurry of spam emails were sent out pretending to be from the driving organisation.

The emails, which gave motorists ‘fixed penalty receipts’, was reported to have been received by a number of motorists.

The DVSA has advised drivers on what to do if they should receive a message like this, with a spokesperson saying: “DVSA never sends fixed penalty notices to customers by email. We strongly advise anyone who receives any of these emails to delete the email without opening the attachment.”

Anyone who receives an email like this has been asked by the DVSA to report it Action Fraud, the UK’s centre for reporting internet crime and fraud.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards agency was launched in 2014, taking over from the Driving Standards Agency and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

The agency is in charge of making sure that MOT garages follow set standards, and also set standards for driving and motorcycling. It was put under pressure back in August 2015, after its new MOT system was introduced but crashed, leaving garages unable to issue tested cars with passed certificates.

Thousands of motorists were unable to drive as a result of the glitch, and many garages lost hundreds of pounds after having to turn away customers as their system would either crash or run too slowly to work efficiently. Garages began issuing old-style paper certificates to continue trading and testing.
