In a new survey, travel search website Skyscanner believes it has hit on what the ideal holiday hire car is for British motorists.
And it seems that perfect getaway motor varies greatly on whether you’re a man or a woman, with the sexes having very different views on what should constitute their sunshine wheels.
Firstly, it is men who are most likely to take to the wheel abroad in the first place, with 80 per cent saying they prefer to drive on holiday, compared with just 22 per cent of women.
Men also preferred a sporty car, as something to have fun with and be seen in, with Aston Martin and Jaguar proving the most popular brands. Convertible models also proved popular with sun-starved British travellers.
In contrast, women preferred the high driving position and all-wheel-drive security of large SUVs such as Range Rovers and Jeeps when tackling unfamiliar roads.
Overall, the opulent Range Rover proved most popular, thanks to its blend of upmarket luxury, practicality and go-anywhere ability.
The Mini Cooper hatchback proved least popular, which is perhaps unsurprising given you’d struggle to get a single suitcase into its boot.
In terms of essential options, air conditioning was considered the most important must-have item in a holiday hire car by survey respondents, with a frugal engine and sat nav coming in close behind.
Holidaymakers are seemingly confident in their driving skills, as the often embarrassment-saving parking sensors were only deemed important by one per cent of participants.
