Volkswagen has released its new Polo GTI, showcasing a new look for the compact performance hatchback.

Set to rival the Ford Fiesta ST, the Polo GTI wears a new face which ties in more closely with the design of the larger Golf GTI. The hallmark red accents have been applied across the front honeycomb grille, while high-performance Matrix LED headlights are fitted as standard too.

In terms of powertrain, the Polo GTI utilises the same 204bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine as the previous-generation car, enabling a 0-60mph time of 6.3 seconds. Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, too.

Fitted with a sport suspension setup that drops the GTI’s ride height by 15 millimetres over the regular Polo, it also benefits from three driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – that allow the driver to tailor the car’s throttle response and engine note.

Inside, the Polo GTI benefits from an eight-inch infotainment system incorporating both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. A digital cockpit comes as standard too, replacing the conventional analogue dials with a configurable display.

A range of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and rear traffic alert is all included as standard too.

It’s expected that prices for the new Polo GTI will be released shortly.
