Volkswagen has revealed the next model in its electric car plans – the long-awaited ID.Buzz.

Joining the ID.3 and ID.4 in VW’s EV range, the Buzz will be sold in both passenger MPV (microbus) and van body styles, with the latter called the ID.Buzz Cargo.

Using the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric car platform, the new model is set to offer vast amounts of space thanks to its long wheelbase and short overhangs. At launch, the MPV version comes with five seats, though the firm hopes to expand the range with six- and seven-seat options in the future while an extended model is in the pipeline too.

Featuring a design inspired by Volkswagen’s classic ‘Type 2’ model, the ID.Buzz retains styling details like a two-tone paint scheme, which will be optionally available. Along with a main body colour, the top half of the model and bonnet is painted Candy White, while other cool details include the large central Volkswagen logo (just like the original) and LED lights that stretch across the front end.

The ID.Buzz will offer customers a range of the latest technology, as it mirrors the interior of the ID.3 with a minimalist, light and modern design, with a large touchscreen and digital instrument screen included. It also packs safety features like Travel Assist for semi-autonomous driving and self-parking functionality. It also comes with provision for ‘over-the-air’ updates, which means constant improvements can be made to it, even once it’s been manufactured.

At launch the ID.Buzz debuts with a single top-spec powertrain, which uses a 201bhp electric motor and 77kWh battery. An official range has not been given, but a range of around 250 miles is expected, with Volkswagen saying its battery can be charged from five to 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes thanks to 170kW rapid charging capability. Further power options are set to be introduced after the initial launch too.

Volkswagen has also said the model will be manufactured and delivered in a ‘carbon-neutral way, with the interior making use of a range of recycled materials. The whole cabin is vegan-friendly as well.

Pre-orders for the ID.Buzz are set to begin in May ahead of first deliveries in the autumn. Pricing and full specifications will be announced nearer the time.
