Car companies’ April Fools marketing jokes may be long gone, but Lexus has just taken the covers off its ‘Advanced Hoverboard’, which it claims will be touching down this summer.

Described by the Japanese company as “one of the most advanced Hoverboards the world has seen”, this new addition to the Lexus range “brings the stuff of science fiction closer to real world fact”.

Making use of so-called super-conductive technology, this odd creation relies on magnetic levitation with liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, that work to provide a type of “frictionless movement”, which has previously been thought impossible.

Despite the absence of wheels, a cabin or even a conventional powerplant, Lexus states that the hoverboard shares design cues with its automotive creations.

As the fourth project in the company’s ‘Amazing in Motion’ campaign, this prototype is being tested in Barcelona over the coming weeks, ahead of the campaign’s launch.

Sadly, however, the Lexus Hoverboard is just a prototype and will not be available to buy. Take a closer look in the video here.
