The latest version of the Countryman, which will arrive later in the year, gets cosmetic updates including a refreshed grille, new bumpers at the front and back, LED headlamps and LED fog lamps, both of which are now standard. The trademark Union Jack tail lights have also been introduced, which also feature on the standard Mini.
Inside, the cabin comes more in line with the latest generation Clubman. New features include a five-inch digital instrument cluster, as seen in the Mini Electric, which is now standard across the range. Other additions include piano black trim to lift the feel of quality and an upgraded infotainment system – in 6.5- or eight-inch form depending on spec – which comes with satellite navigation, DAB radio and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
The changes aren’t just visual though, with minor tweaks being made to the engine line-up, largely to improve efficiency. The range starts with a three-cylinder 134bhp 1.5-litre Cooper petrol engine, or a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel – badged Cooper D. But for more performance, there’s the Cooper S which now gets 176bhp and the JCW version which pumps out 302bhp.
There’s also a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid which mates a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine at the front to an electric motor driving the rear wheels. It can also be driven on electric power alone achieving a claimed 38-mile range.
