Greater London is the ‘speed camera capital’ of the UK, according to just-published research. The region inside the M25 motorway ring has twice as many camera locations as anywhere else in the UK.

And most of those monitor area where the speed limit is just 30mph. In all, Greater London has one in six of all cameras, more than all those in Scotland, Ireland and Wales combined.

The West Midlands has the next highest tally of cameras, with one in 12 of the UK’s total, followed by West Yorkshire, which has one in 14.

And while the decision to cut funding for cameras has gained wide publicity, the decision will affect only 3% of 5500 cameras, leaving the UK with more than any of its European neighbours.

The research was published by RoadPilot, a company which supplies speed camera data for satellite navigation systems and mobile phones.
