Audi is a byword for quality, comfort and reliability. The A1, the baby of the range, is no exception to the rule. After a recent remodel, this stylish supermini has a wide variety of options and engines to choose from. That's why we have picked the best three models from the range, to cater to three requirements.

The Smart choice for saving money – SE 1.0 TFSI

With the base model in the range, you still get a lot of equipment for your money. With an AUX input port to connect your media player to the speaker system, a daytime headlight mode and electronic heated wing mirrors as standard there's plenty of equipment on offer. With Audi's 1.0 TFSI petrol engine and the 5-speed manual gearbox, it gets up to 60 in just under 11 seconds, with a top speed of 116mph and a reasonable 67.3mpg.

The small-looking body is deceiving to the eye, with plenty of space in the boot and leg room in the back. The interior is clean and uncluttered, with the option to fit sports style seats in the front. As one of the premium options on the market, the £14,530 starting price is very reasonable for a quality product that is also cheap to run. For an extra £1,540, the automatic 7-speed S-tronic gearbox is available.

The Smart choice for value – Black Edition 1.4 TFSI

Moving up from the SE, the Black Edition adds more to an already well-equipped model. To the exterior, it adds privacy windows at the rear, Xenon plus headlights, Light and Rain sensors and LED tail lights. Despite being sportier than the base model, the rear spoiler is removed on the Black edition. There are many interior additions, with the S-line bucket seats as standard in black leather. Also added is automatic climate control, LED interior lights and an improved media system, which can be connected to via Bluetooth.

With the 1.4 TFSI under the bonnet, it improves the top speed from the SE to 134mph and cuts the 0-60 to 7.8 seconds. Despite the bigger engine, the consumption figure is still a respectable 56.5, meaning even with the sportier model, the fuel bill will be relatively cheap. As a more enjoyable experience, this is again a premium choice in terms of the hotter superminis, with the build quality up to a very high standard. Starting at £21,290, the Black edition is lighter, sportier and more enjoyable to drive than the standard model.

The Smart choice for technophiles – S1 2.0 TFSI

The S1 is the leaner, meaner and fastest model of the range, with the 2.0 litre petrol engine propelling it to 155mph, thanks to a 6-speed manual and the legendary quattro 4-wheel drive system. With a 0-60 of 5.8 seconds, it is not pedestrian off the line either, meaning this car can get up to speed much quicker than the rest of the range. With the S performance package fitted, the body looks like more exciting than the rest of the A1's and, depending on the paint job, stands out.

Inside it is very well-appointed, with controls on the steering wheel, Audi's top end media system and the S-line sports seats as standard. With quattro badges throughout, it shows the car's pedigree and what the car will be like to handle.

Even so, this car is also very comfortable and not just for the racers and technophiles amongst us. With all mod-cons and multiple options that can improve the experience even further, the S1 starts at £25,595.
