While more motorists than ever are coming around to the idea of EVs, there’s still a group that are yet to be convinced – motoring enthusiasts.

But in a bid to convince car nuts of the potential of these vehicles, Ford has debuted a new concept demonstrating the performance of electric cars – the Mustang Mach-E 1,400, That number references the outrageous amount of power this one-off prototype has.

The power comes from seven electric motors – five more than what you get in the upcoming Mustang Mach-E that this racing model is based on.

Developed by Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles, which has worked with the firm on various projects, the Mustang Mach-E 1,400 is the result of 10,000 hours of work, which Ford says “shows just how much performance can be harnessed without using a drop of fuel”.

It features an interchangeable chassis that can be adapted depending on scenario, whether that be drifting or track setups, and its layout can be altered to be front-, rear- or all-wheel-drive.

Alongside all those electric motors, it features aerodynamic tweaks – such as its cooling ducts, huge front splitter, dive planes and massive rear wing.

Ron Heiser, chief programme engineer for the Mustang Mach-E, said: “Now is the perfect time to leverage electric technology, learn from it, and apply it to our portfolio. Mustang Mach-E is going to be fun to drive, just like every other Mustang before it, but Mustang Mach-E 1,400 is completely insane, thanks to the efforts of Ford Performance and RTR.”

This prototype is set to make its appearance in NASCAR soon, and while you won’t see a road-going version anytime soon, the technology and expertise in this is likely to influence upcoming performance EVs from the firm.

Ford was slow to embrace electrification, but is undergoing an ambitious offensive. The Mustang Mach-E will arrive at the start of next year as the firm’s first bespoke EV, with a range of 370 miles. It’ll be followed by an electric version of Ford’s iconic Transit, while so far in 2020 the firm has introduced plug-in hybrid versions of its Kuga crossover and Transit Custom van, with additional hybrid models in the pipeline, too.
