New front styling and interior updates freshen French small hatchback's appeal. New petrol engines help out, too.
Citroen has treated its C4 small hatchbacks to a mid-life makeover. Minor changes inside and out neaten and freshen its looks, bringing the C4 closer to Citroen’s newest car, the C5. The C4’s bonnet is now more rounded, while the make’s double-chevron badge is restyled. The front bumper is also new.
Changes inside include moving the rev counter from in front of the driver and to the centre of the dash, where the other instruments are housed. Plastics and fabrics on the doors and dash have been changed to attempt a more upmarket feel. Two new petrol engines will be available. Each co-developed with BMW, who are leaders in fuel-efficient engine know-how. A 1.6 VTi producing 120bhp replaces the previous 110bhp unit of similar capacity. Despite the power increase, the new engine is cleaner and more economical, offering up to 42.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 159g/km.
The second engine is also a 1.6, but mated to a turbocharger to produce 150bhp. This returns a creditable up to 40.9mpg overall and CO2 emissions of just 164g/km.
Three diesel engines, a 2.0 HDi and 1.6 HDi units producing 92bhp or 110bhp continue from the current car.
