Audi showcases Allroad Shooting Brake
This is the Audi Allroad Shooting Brake, a rugged new crossover concept which showcases the future styling of the brand's models.
Unveiled this week at the Detroit motor show, the model fuses the sporty estate styling of a shooting brake with an off-road twist, including a raised ride height and protective plastic lower body cladding.
Badged 'e-tron', the car is powered by a hybrid system that mates twin electric motors to a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. A further electric motor mounted on the rear axle allows for on-demand four-wheel drive.
With a combined total system power of 402bhp, the Allroad Shooting Brake can get from 0-62mph in a Porsche 911 rivaling 4.6 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 155mph.
The car's panels are constructed from a blend of aluminium and carbon-fibre. Despite this lightweight cocktail, the Allroad Shooting Brake tips the scales and a not inconsiderable 1,600kg.
However, the efficiency of the hybrid powertrain means that the car's weight and power are no barrier to impressive fuel economy and cleanliness – 149mpg and 45g/km in CO2 emissions to be exact.
The Allroad operates in three distinct driving modes. EV mode sees power drawn solely from the on-board 8.8kWh battery for near silent, emissions-free motoring.
In Hybrid mode, the petrol and electric motors work together, either providing greater on-demand power or charging the battery pack in low-load situations.
In Sport mode, all systems are geared to providing maximum power for optimised performance.
It is widely thought that design features on the Allroad Shooting Brake will make an appearance on the next Audi TT, in particular the grille and headlamp arrangements.
It's also rumoured that Audi could put the Shooting Brake into production as a more practical, mini-estate version of the TT.
