Chevrolet has revealed its newest version of the Corvette, the 2020 Stingray.

The Stingray – otherwise known as the C8 – is the first Corvette-badged production car to feature a mid-engine layout. The move has caused some controversy amongst purists, but as the Stingray looks set to be the fastest ever Corvette, many are likely to forgive the change in philosophy.

Unlike many new mid-engined supercars, the Corvette remains naturally-aspirated, offering up a 488bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine that delivers 637Nm of torque. This means that, when the car is fitted with the optional Z51 Performance Package, it can accelerate from 0-60mph in under three seconds.

The president of Chevrolet’s parent firm General Motors, Mark Reuss, said: “Corvette has always represented the pinnacle of innovation and boundary-pushing at GM. The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout.

“In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history. Customers are going to be thrilled with our focus on details and performance across the board.”

Given the change of engine position, the Corvette’s silhouette has changed drastically, with the car’s cockpit much further forward, and its boot now sitting under the bonnet.

There is more good news, too; the Corvette will still be something of an every man’s supercar, with US prices set to start at under $60,000 (£48,000). It is set to arrive in the UK too, in limited numbers, through an official importer.
