Mercedes has announced that six new EVs will join its range in the next few years as the firm gears up its electric offensive.
The models, which will all wear the ‘EQ’ nameplate that Mercedes reserves for its EVs and plug-in hybrids, will join the EQC SUV and EQV, which are both already available.
Heading up the new Mercedes electric range will be the EQS, which will be available as both a saloon and SUV. Set to offer a similar footprint and levels of luxury to the brand’s flagship S-Class, the EQS will be the first Mercedes EV to sit on a dedicated electric platform, rather than an existing one.
It’s set to offer bold styling and impressive levels of spaciousness thanks to the bespoke platform, and will offer a range of up 435 miles, which is longer than any other electric car on sale today.
The EQS will arrive in 2021 and is currently undergoing final testing across the world.
Christoph Starzynski, vice president of electric vehicles at Mercedes-Benz, said: “The EQS has already piled up far more than two million test kilometres from the heat of South Africa to the cold of Northern Sweden.
“The EQS will be the S-Class of electric vehicles. That is why it is undergoing the same demanding development program as any other vehicle that has the privilege of proudly bearing the three-pointed star. In addition, there were quite a few tests specifically for electric cars that cover important development priorities such as range, charging and efficiency”.
As part of its announcement, Mercedes has also confirmed the new EQE, which will be available as a saloon and SUV, and will use the same underpinnings as the EQS.
Due to be unveiled later this year is the EQA, which will become the most affordable electric Mercedes. It’s based on the brand’s GLA crossover and will likely offer sub-£40,000 pricing. It will be followed by the EQB, an electric version of the new GLB crossover.
