There’s no question Kia is a company on the up, and while several years ago any offering to the family hatchback market would have been dismissed, the company is now a serious player – thanks largely to the Ceed.
Its styling is definitely geared to a European audience; just look at those stretched headlamps and gaping grille. This top of the range GT model even boasts stylish LED daytime running lights and an aggressive body kit.
Inside, the build quality is on a par with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra – it's all well nailed together with upmarket materials, and the controls are well placed and intuitive to use.
Space is also a major consideration for opting for the ceed. There’s ample room in the front and back, even in this three-door version, and the boot is well shaped and bigger than those of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra.
Where the Ceed falls down, though, is the way it drives. It’s not quite as dynamic as the best in class in the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus or even the SEAT Leon. Even this range-topping GT isn't as gutsy as the Focus ST or Golf GTi.
The are a couple of petrol an diesel engines on offer. Even the 133hp 1.6 litre lacks any real punch, so we’d be more inclined to opt for the 126bhp 1.6 litre diesel, which pulls strongly and revs sweetly.
The ride is compliant albeit a tad bobbly over undulating surfaces, and the steering isn't as precise as it perhaps could be.
The Ceed has proved reliable over the years but the biggest draw is the seven year warranty for ultimate peace of mind.
