Volvo is due to unveil a new concept car that can find a parking space and maneuver itself into it, all without human intervention.
The technology is reliant on transmitters in the road infrastructure, which lets the car know that the self-parking service is available.
The driver simply hops out and instructs the car to park itself via a smartphone-based application.
Using on-board sensors, and technology currently available in Volvo cars such as automated braking, the car can then negotiate other vehicles and pedestrians, and find a vacant space in a designated car park.
The driver can later summon the car to return to the same spot later on to be picked up.
The technology is part of Swedish company’s Vision 2020, in which it aims to make cars so safe that no motorist or pedestrian is killed by a Volvo in a road collision by the year 2020.
Thomas Broberg, senior safety advisor at Volvo, said: "Autonomous Parking is a concept technology that relieves the driver of the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space.
“The driver just drops the vehicle off at the entrance to the car park and picks it up in the same place later."
