Volvo is planning a super luxurious version of its XC90 off-roader to go head to head with the Range Rover – the XC90 Excellence.

Hoping to grab the attention of well-heeled car buyers, the Swedish company has gone all out to make the XC90 Excellence the most upmarket model it has produced in its 88-year history.

Set to be unveiled at the upcoming Shanghai motor show, this large 4×4 will boast just four individual seats – three less than the standard car – to give each passenger a truly first class-style experience, with a distinctly Scandinavian flavour.

Volvo is known for its supremely comfortable and supportive seats and each of the four broad chairs in the XC90 Excellence recline individually and offer massage functions and seat ventilation for the highest level of comfort.

Volvo has never launched a car like this before. This is the car that demonstrates what the name Volvo now means.

Passengers also benefit from increased legroom thanks to the loss of the third row of seats, along with a retractable control touchscreen, folding tables, a fridge with bottle and glass holders, heated and cooled cup holders and handmade crystal glasses from Swedish company Orrefors.

According to Volvo’s senior vice president of design, Thomas Ingenlath: “We have created the ultimate luxury experience of Scandinavian design. Volvo has never launched a car like this before. This is the car that demonstrates what the name Volvo now means.”

Elements adding to the feeling of luxury in the cabin include passenger footrests, chic ambient lighting, additional soundproofing, noise cancelling tyres and unique leather interior trim. It also boasts a high-end 20-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system which offers surround sound to those in the rear seats.

Volvo is not currently planning to sell the Excellence in the UK, though with 24,000 models sold before the car has even hit showrooms, it is possible that the company will bring a similar model to our shores if demand is high enough.
