Korean carmaker Kia may be best known for its value for money and excellent aftersales support, but it has big ambitions in the performance car sector. Not only has it entered the hot hatchback market with the excellent Pro Cee’d GT, it also took the world by surprise by unveiling this, the GT4 Stinger concept, at the Detroit motor show in January.
In a radical departure for the brand, the Stinger is a 2+2, rear-wheel-drive coupe, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine developing 315bhp.
There are some radical design elements too, including an illuminated ‘tiger-nose’ grille and a vertical stack of LEDs in place of regular headlamps.
Kia’s UK chief has already said he wanted to develop a range of performance ‘GT’ cars, of which the Stinger would be the flagship. It is expected to go on sale in 2016.
