Car boot fairs are usually about selling tatty furniture or the unwanted contents of your shed. But at this one, there was a chance to pick up a work of art by a top artist.
Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair opened its doors to the public. Held on London’s Brick Lane, 4000 art lovers flocked to the capital to grab themselves a bargain at Vauxhall’s sixth annual Car Boot Art Fair
More than 40 world famous artists selling their work, from limited edition prints by Sir Peter Blake worth more than £400 selling for just £40 to works by James Cauty going at a 90% discount. The event had a wrestling theme and featured a wrestling ring centrepiece staging live matches, auctions and musical performances throughout the fair, including Martin Creed and his band Owada, and the up and coming new band Revere. Curator Karen Ashton said: “Here artists have the chance to enjoy themselves because they know they are not showing to a mass audience and there will be no critics waiting to rip them apart”
Vauxhall has been involved with the curators of the Art Car Boot Fair since 2003 when it supplied a selection of its models for an event at the Brighton Photo Biennial. Since then Vauxhall’s commitment has included supporting the five previous ACBF events in Brick Lane via artist commissions and supplying plenty of 'boots' from which artists can sell their wares.
