Vauxhall is to launch a new, range-topping version of its Astra VXR hot hatchback, called the Extreme.
Due to be unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March, the three-door model is set to be the Luton brand’s fastest and most powerful Astra ever.
While no performance or technical data has yet been released, Vauxhall has confirmed the Extreme will be based on the Astra Cup race car, which competed in the gruelling Nurburgring Endurance Championship.
As such, the current 276bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged motor is likely to be uprated to around 300bhp, in line with the racing version.
This would see improvements to the regular Astra VXR’s 5.9 second 0-60mph time and 155mph top speed.

The Astra VXR Extreme is likely to to get a power boost over the standard model.
The Extreme will feature a number of sporty upgrades both inside and out, including racing seats, six-point harnesses and a new, more aerodynamic body kit.
It also gets a new BMW M-style quad exhaust pipe arrangement, a huge rear wing and a bespoke wheel and tyre combination.
Liberal use of carbon-fibre in the car’s construction will ensure that kerb weight is reduced as much as possible, maximising performance.
The launch of the Astra VXR Extreme, which will go into low-volume production later this year, coincides with the tenth anniversary of Vauxhall’s VXR performance brand.
Prices for the new model have yet to be announced, but expect a hefty premium over the standard Astra VXR’s £27,260 list price.
