As car manufacturers fight for our attention, many of their TV ads have turned into movie blockbusters. But, you don’t always have to spend the most to get the biggest impact. Sometimes it works best when the car is the star. We’ve collected together some of the best car ads for your viewing delight. However, the fun doesn’t stop here. Join in and share your favourite UK car ads in the comments section below, or on Facebook and Twitter, and we’ll highlight some of the best in a future post.

Mercedes-Benz S Class – Magic Body Control

Everyone knows you can’t go wrong with a chicken in an ad about cars, don’t they?! This simple, yet effective, ad plays on the qualities of the Mercedes Intelligent Drive system, showcasing the stability and driving comfort of an optional suspension system on its S-Class models. However, not only does this ad feature chickens (did we mention we think chickens in car ads work really well, see this one for an example), but the soundtrack is also inspired – who doesn’t like Diana Ross?

Honda CR-V – Honda Illusions

One of the most shared car ads of all time; we love Honda’s Illusions ad from 2013 for the creative and clever take on perspective and visual perceptions. The slogan, ‘An Impossible Made Possible’ completely sums up the artwork on show and goes a long way towards highlighting the technical innovation within the design of the car and its advanced engine. Optical illusions continue to make headlines and Honda has cleverly taken advantage of this trend, producing a worthy follow-up to its equally-inspiring Honda Hands ad campaign earlier in the year.

Skoda Fabia – Made of Lovely Stuff

Unbelievably, Skoda burst back on to the scene with its iconic sponge cake advertising seven years ago (2007), long before the Great British Bake Off took to the UK airwaves  in 2010. While Skoda spent many years in the doldrums, suffering a damaged reputation, this inventive cake ad – the cake itself took 10 days to make – introduced the Skoda brand to a whole new generation of potential car buyers. Bold, fun and creative, this ad put Skoda firmly back into the limelight. The innovation continued, with the follow-up ‘Made of Meaner Stuff’ ad which aired in 2010.

Jaguar – British Villains

While this blockbuster epic was originally made for a US audience in the 2014 Superbowl break, the fact it later got shown on UK TV means we think it qualifies for the list. Have you ever wondered why in Hollywood movies, all of the villains are plated by Brits? A proper blockbuster production, this thoroughly British ad for Jaguar pays homage to the brand’s association with great British spy dramas, like James Bond. While versions of the ad might have been banned for encouraging irresponsible behaviour, we absolutely love the suave sophistication and film star good looks of this high production value advertising extravaganza.

Citro?n Picasso – Robot

Following on from the skating robot in 2006, the dancing robot in 2007, and the ‘Robot’s Revenge’ ad in 2010, this 2013 ‘behind-the-scenes’ ad shows what it takes to make the award-winning Citroen Xsara Picasso, highlighting quality, fun and innovation. Playing on the Picasso sub-brand, Citro?n’s robots cause some mischief in the factory, building and ‘decorating’ their own car. It turns out all right in the end though, with the car leaving the production line just as planned – albeit with that sense of fun still hidden under the paintwork!.

Over to you…
