This weekend – despite the terrible weather – it’s the Virgin London Marathon, with tens of thousands of individuals pounding the streets of England’s capital to raise money for charity. If you’re going to be travelling in London on Sunday 22nd April, there are a number of travel routes that will be affected.

The best idea for this weekend is to make the most of the fantastic public transport options London has to offer and take the tube or bus. However, some bus routes have been affected too so make sure you check out the Transport for London website for more information.

In order to make sure there is as little disruption as possible, the roads affected by the Marathon route will have staggered closures and re-openings, ensuring that – by around 7pm – the roads should be back to normal. The main areas that will be affected are Canary Wharf to Parliament Square including Westminster, Southwark and Tower Bridge; The Highway, The Lower Route and Victoria Embankment; south of the Thames, Blackheath and Deptford roads will staggered closures.

If you’re interested in going to watch the race, then approaching roads to this area will also be affected – and if you’re travelling from outside London, then expect there to be heavy queues on the alternative routes to the race.

Public transport in London will be affected, although not as severely as the roads, including London Underground tube stops, certain bus routes – including the RV1, which runs to Covent Garden and Soho – and various docking stations of the ‘Boris bikes’.

For those of you whose friends or family are running in the Marathon, make sure you get yourself to the finish line; the nearest tube stations include Westminster and St James’s Park. The race itself is (as you would expect a marathon to be) just over 26 miles long – that’s the same as running the entire Victoria line, from Brixton to Walthamstow Central, twice! Last year, the Virgin Marathon runners raised around £51.8 million for various charities, making this an important event in the sporting – and fundraising – calendar.
