Tesla’s Model X, the highly anticipated electric SUV, has finally arrived.
Entering the hotly contested luxury SUV segment, the new Model X aims to consolidate the success garnered by the ‘S’. The brand aims to maintain momentum until the equally long awaited Model III takes on the BMW 3 Series in 2017.
Tesla had had no problem with demand for the $130,000 (£85,936) Model X, handing over the keys to six new owners on the day of the launch.
It’s not difficult to see why. Whilst the Model S redefined what electric cars can offer, the X moves the goalposts into another stratosphere. For, despite being a seven seat SUV, the top-spec P90D will hit 0-60mph in 3.2secs, which is about as rapid as a Porsche 911 Turbo. Top speed is a limited 155mph. It does this whilst maintaining a 250-mile range, which is increased further in the standard 90D.
This space-age breadth of ability is reflected in the exterior styling – with the addition of ‘falcon doors’. Although not traditionally practical, due to the wide berth needed to open them, Tesla offers a solution. By double-hinging the doors, and fitting three ultrasonic sensors, the car can adjust the ‘span’, leaving occupants able to get in and out with ease. They look fantastic, too.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said: “The mission of Tesla is to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. It’s important to know that any kind of car can go electric.”
