A study conducted by HPI suggests that women make more reasonable decisions when buying a used car, meaning that only 35% of women regret a used car purchase compared to 43% of men.

When it comes to making such an important purchase, 51% of women are eager to ask the advice of a friend or family member who has some knowledge on the subject, where only 27% will consult another party before taking the plunge.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manage for HPI, commented ‘The survey suggests that men are more difficult to please, when it comes to used car buying and that they won’t take advice. This could be why men are more likely to think they’ve been had, but it also leaves them vulnerable to fraudsters. In contrast, women are eager to take advice and prepare before checking out their options. This clearly helps them make measured decisions and as a result, they are happy with their purchase’.

It’s not just gender which affects consumer decisions and satisfaction; unsurprisingly, senior car buyers were more careful about their purchases, meaning eight out of ten older motorists drive away happy. Geography can also play a part – 83% of buyers in Ulster felt like they’ve got a good deal, but only 49% in the East Midlands were pleased with their purchase.

Worryingly, the report also found that 30% of buyers did no checks when buying a used car. If you search on, we’ll have performed some of the basic checks for you, but it’s also worth having a look at the MOT and other documents yourself before you hand over any money.

As well as performing background checks yourself, and taking advice on your purchase from a friend or relative with a bit of know-how, using the search function can give you an idea of whether the car you’re eyeing up is reasonably priced and in good condition compared to other, similar vehicles. Shopping around online will help you bag a bargain, and drive away delighted with your used car.
