On the face of it the Mitsubishi Shogun may not have the glamorous good looks or svelte lines of its premium rivals, but what it lacks in aesthetics it more than makes up for in work ethic. The Shogun isn’t for posing on the King’s Road, it’s for getting you to places where other cars simply cannot reach. It’s a workhorse, and a damned good one at that.

Fitted with a 3.2-litre turbodiesel motor, the Shogun has oodles of pulling power – there’s a reason they are preferred by police motorway patrols: because they are one of the few cars on sale that can tow a stricken HGV off the carriageway. So, if you’re after something that will take the strain of a horse box or caravan, look no further. It’s also fitted with locking differentials and a switchable four-wheel-drive system, so you can venture ever further into the rough stuff.

All of the Shogun’s off-road prowess does mean that its road manners are somewhat lacking. Powerful though that engine might be, it feels sluggish at higher speeds, while the steering is slow and the generous amount of give in the suspension makes for a somewhat rolly-polly experience in the bends.

That’s not to say the big Mitsubishi is without its charms. It feels indestructible and can be specified with a number of high-end options, including rear-seat television screens, to make it feel a little less utilitarian.
