Jeep has past form in the off-road game, with the brand able to trace its origins back to the no-nonsense Willy’s Jeep of World War II. This latest version of the range-topping Grand Cherokee model couldn’t be further removed from its forbear though: It’s a leather lined luxury cruiser, designed to mix it amongst Range Rovers and BMW X5s in the posher parts of town.
That’s not to say it can’t cut it in the rough stuff. Unlike some more overtly sporting rivals the Jeep isn’t fitted with aggressive low-profile tyres but instead can be specified with air suspension and a plethora of off-road driving modes for impressive mud-plugging ability.
You’ll be pleased to hear the Jeep will fit into your life even if you don’t spend your entire time traversing mountain passes. It’s available with a 6.4-litre V8 petrol or a rather more sensible 3.0-litre diesel that should return about 30mpg. Combine that to a spacious cabin that’s stuffed with toys, and a comfortable ride, and you’ve got a car versatile enough to handle whatever you might want to throw at it.
