An extremely rare Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet has gone on sale at one of London’s leading classic dealerships.

The striking model is one of only 68 right-hand examples produced and, thanks to a comprehensive restoration by Sleeping Beauties of Brisbane, is offered in near-concours condition by Hexagon Classics.

Finished in black, with a contrasting red leather interior, this SE 3.5 Cabriolet version was handbuilt in 1970, five years after the model was introduced to rival the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Corniche Convertibles.

A potent 3.5-litre V8 sits under the bonnet, with its power put to the road via a super-smooth four-speed, floor-mounted automatic gearbox. Excellent sound-deadening serves to keep the comfortable four-seat cockpit relatively noise-free.

Among the Mercedes’ other creature comforts are power steering, front headrests, electric windows and a snug-fitting six-layer folding roof.

Paul Michaels, chairman of Hexagon Classics, said: “Seeing a right-hand-drive Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 for sale is extremely rare, let alone one like this in such incredible condition. It’s one of the greatest cars in the German brand’s history and certainly deserves all the plaudits it gets.

“Sleeping Beauties of Brisbane has done sterling work restoring this stunning car, and a lucky buyer can now profit from their brilliance and Mercedes’ expertise.”

The rare car is offered for an undisclosed sum complete with its original handbook and detailed pictures of the restoration completed.
