When it comes to buying new cars, Porsche customers are the biggest spenders when presented with the optional extras sheet, according to research conducted by HPI.
The model most kitted out by buyers is the Porsche Cayenne SUV, with each leaving the showroom with an average of £10,000 of additional equipment fitted. That’s more than enough to buy the UK’s cheapest SUV, the Dacia Duster, with change to spare.
While it seems may seem excessive to spend that kind of money on upgraded technology and luxury fittings, HPI suggests that doing so may help owners get a better price when it comes to sell, particularly with premium cars where buyers expect niceties such as sat nav and leather seats.

It would seem that SUV buyers are particularly flush, as after the Cayenne, it is the BMW X5 that has the most options lavished on it at an average of £8,000.
In third place is the Mercedes-Benz SLK, with customers spending an average of £6,290 on toys – still more than enough to buy the UK’s cheapest car, the Dacia Sandero.
It’s not just premium cars that are being decked out, with both the Vauxhall Insignia and Volkswagen Golf being ordered with over £1,000 worth of additional kit on average.
Phil Peace, Operations Director for HPI, said: “As vehicle technology advances, things that seemed out of this world ten years ago, are now commonplace. Car owners think nothing of investing in in-built sat nav, Bluetooth and driver aids, such as self-parking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning systems. In addition, in-car entertainment is almost essential for the modern family, offering TV on the move.
“It’s clear that new car buyers are keen on spending that bit extra for those luxury gadgets. The good news for these car owners, is that these costly extras can really help a vehicle get a good price, when it comes to reselling.”
