The Porsche 911 is without doubt one of the most iconic sports cars in the world and you could be forgiven for mistaking the latest generation, dubbed the nine eleven 991, for one of its predecessors.

Porsche has taken the ‘if it ain't broke, don't fix it’ philosophy, so as well as what appears to be minor cosmetic surgery, it retains the rear wheel drive, rear engined layout.

Power for this Carrera S comes from a 395bhp 3.8-litre straight six meaning it’ll do the 0-60mph dash in four and a half seconds and keep going to a top speed of 188mph. What makes it so special though is its split personality, drive it in a relaxed manner and the 911 is a comfortable cruiser, smooth and refined, but flick it into sport mode and it turns into a very different animal.

Despite all that weight in the back, it has astonishing levels of grip.

Inside, the cabin is beautifully laid out, and has the premium feel we’ve come to expect from Porsche, although the sat nav/ entertainment unit is a bit fiddly to use. The boot, which is in the front, is also a little tight on space, but there’s always extra room in the back where there are two rear seats, which, lets be honest, are only really suitable for children.

Prices for the 911 Carrera S start at just over £83,000, but used versions are available on from around £40,000.
