Avon and Somerset constabulary is considering prosecuting young drivers featured in a new BBC show after their antics generated over 300 complaints.
Barely Legal Drivers first aired last week and secretly documents the poor driving of Britain’s newly licenced drivers.
But now the show has been subject to an outpouring of criticism from viewers who were left shocked by the aggressive, dangerous and often illegal behaviour on display.
Aside from shouting obscenities at fellow motorists, the young drivers were observed using mobile phones, speeding and jumping red lights.
One young lady even admitted that she thought she was a better driver when a "little tipsy". A total of 286 people complained to the BBC, with a further 45 voicing their concerns to the broadcast regulator Ofcom.
The police are now getting involved to investigate any driving offences committed and are considering prosecution. Speaking to The Metro, a BBC spokesman said: “Barely Legal Drivers highlights the issue that young drivers in the UK are some of the most dangerous in Europe.
“It’s about making young people better drivers.”
The show has previously come under fire from one of the young drivers featured, who claimed the BBC duped her into believing she was to appear on a ‘The Only Way is Essex’ style reality TV show. This is despite the young motorist willingly signing a release form once the true nature of the show had been revealed to her.
