People carriers may have fallen out of favour with the thousands of car buyers who now clamour to get their hands on an off-roader every year, but Volkswagen hasn’t given up on this family-friendly formula, having just rejuvenated its Sharan MPV.
This practical seven-seater looks very similar to its predecessor, with boxy but handsome lines, and now boasts a range of engines which all meet the latest European emissions rules, with the refreshed models seeing economy improvements of up to 15 per cent over the previous version.
The Sharan maintains its sliding rear doors and easy-to-fold seats, while the cabin has been given a lift with new upholstery, steering wheel designs and a brand new colour touchscreen media system across the range. Other standard kit on the three-strong S, SE and SEL model range includes Bluetooth phone connectivity, three-zone climate control and automatic post-collision braking, which stops the car automatically should it be involved in a crash.
Prices for the updated Sharan start at £26,300 and rise to more than £36,000 for the range-topper.
SE models receive chrome roof rails and tinted rear windows, front and rear parking sensors and cruise control while range-topping SEL cars feature sat nav, adaptive cruise control, which keeps the car a safe distance behind the car in front, a panoramic sunroof and Alcantara upholstery.
Buyers can choose from four engines – three diesels and one petrol. Most affordable are the 113bhp 2.0-litre diesel and 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol followed by 148bhp and 182bhp 2.0-litre diesel models. The three most powerful engines are also optionally available with VW’s slick DSG automatic gearbox. Official fuel economy ranges from 56.5mpg for the 113bhp diesel to 42.2mpg for the automatic 1.4-litre petrol. Meanwhile, CO2 emissions range from 130g/km to 156g/km, meaning that car tax will set buyers back between £110 and £180 every year.
The new Sharan is now available to order today with the first models arriving with buyers in October. Prices start at £26,300 for the 148bhp 1.4-litre TSI S petrol and rise to £36,280 for the 182bhp DSG automatic 2.0-litre TDI SEL version.
