Volvo’s popular XC60 SUV has been crowned as towcar of the year by the Caravan and Motorhome Club.
The winning XC60 was fitted with the 232bhp 2.0-litre D5 PowerPulse engine, and came in stylish R-Design trim.
As well as scooping the overall victory, the XC60 also won two separate categories – including best family tow car and also the class for caravans weighing between 1,500 and 1,700kg.
The Volkswagen Polo was awarded as the best car for towing a caravan under 1,100kg, with the Peugeot 3008 winning the category for caravans between 1,100 and 1,350kg.
Another Volvo product – the XC40 – was awarded best tow car for caravans between 1,350kg and 1,500kg, while the new Volkswagen Touareg scooped the category for caravans over 1,700kg.
In the pick-up category, it was the Volkswagen Amarok that took the medal, with the Skoda Kodiaq being crowned as the best large family tow car. It was the Kodiaq which won the overall award last year by the same club.
Thirty-five cars were entered from across all manufacturers into the competition, with firms invited to submit entries.
The club is stringent with its testing, and checks all models thoroughly before even a caravan is attached.
Models are assessed for their ability to accelerate up hills, brake when going down them, as well as on the stability and comfort of the car and caravan at national speed limits.
Grenville Chamberlain, Caravan and Motorhome Club chairman, said: “Here at the Caravan and Motorhome Club we are committed to driving forward positive change within the motoring industry and to providing our one million members with relevant information for them to use as they make their next towcar purchase. Our congratulations go to all the winners.”
A separate tow car awards – held by Practical Caravan in association with What Car? And The Camping and Caravanning Club – awarded the BMW 5 Series Touring as their towcar of the year earlier in the year.
