Volkswagen has joined forces with navigation app Waze to offer drivers of its GTI models the chance to experience some of the best roads the UK has to offer.
The campaign called ‘GTI Superdrives’ aims to promote the driving enjoyment of its legendary GTI cars, and VW has teamed up with the Google-owned company to find the 75 best driving roads in the UK.
Data will be supplied through the navigation app – which has two million users – and will be promoted through the car’s in-app settings.
The campaign is only set to run for a couple of months, with Waze analysing roads to see if they’re fit for purpose for driving enjoyment.
Yet, despite locating the routes, the firm has ensured that the roads are scenic but not too far off the beaten track, and close to points of interest. The routes have also been evaluated for their corners, traffic levels and the number of incidents reported on them.
When using the app, users have to look for GTI badges, which resemble those of the brown UK road signs used to highlight tourist destinations. If you’re within 12 miles of a ‘GTI Superdrive’, you can be navigated towards the road.
Some of the top driving roads from Waze’s analysis include the B3135 from Cheddar to Ashwick, as well as the route between Forres and Alford taking in the A940, A939, A944 and A97.
Alison Jones, director of Volkswagen UK, said: “Our GTI badge quite simply stands for driving joy. Working with Waze, we wanted to offer more drivers the chance to get off the often congested ‘beaten track’ and instead experience the simple pleasure of driving once more.
“The aim, very clearly, is about enjoying time behind the wheel – not speeding or driving in a way that increases risk – and we believe that the intelligence of the Waze app helps drivers do just that.”
