Uber rival Gett rolls out fleet of Porsche taxis

Catching a taxi in London pretty much guarantees you one of three things – an iconic black cab, an aging diesel Metrocab or the aging Prius of an Uber driver. But a lucky few will soon be able to hail something much more upmarket, as ride-hailing app Gett has just announced a partnership with Porsche.

The two companies will pair up to provide 100 Porsche models available as taxis within London. To avoid flooding the drivers with demand, the deal is limited to high-value customers – those who may be won over by their taxi trip, and would consider buying a Porsche in the future.

Wannabe 911 buyers need not apply, though, as the models provided are from the practical end of Porsche’s lineup. That means trendy hybrids and SUVs – namely, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid and the Macan SUV.

Rides within a certain area of central London will be charged at a flat-rate of £20, which could be a bargain compared to rivals during rush hour.  Though the taxis will go outside this area, trips will be charged accordingly.

While Porsche’s drivers won’t have ‘The Knowledge’ that’s made black cab drivers so famous, the firm says they’ve all been trained at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone race circuit. Tail-out action on the North Circular isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, then…

“We’re delighted that our customers will be able to travel in Porsche cars in central London with chauffeurs,” said Ragnar Schulte, general manager for marketing at Porsche GB.

“This premium travel initiative will last six months with results being used to inform our future strategy for ‘on-demand’, premium transportation. We invite all users to give feedback on this new service.”

The cars will be trawling central London until May 2018.
