If you hadn’t heard (perhaps you’ve just come back from the moon?) the royal baby has been born. Now, if like us, you’ve got a bit bored of continuous news coverage of the event, particularly when it’s not actually conveying any news, you’ve probably noticed motoring outlets publishing their top recommendations for cars suitable for the new parents.
We thought differently, instead taking a look at the cars that the heir to the throne could be driving when he turns 17. His father was famously bought a Ford Focus as a first car by the Prince of Wales when he passed his driving test.
However, with the range of future-looking concepts currently being exhibited by motor manufacturers, the royal sprog has a potentially very exciting motoring future ahead of him.

VW’s groundbreaking eco concept car couldn’t be more suited to a freshly licenced prince. Expected to come with a six-figure price tag and featuring butterfly doors, it is as exclusive and flashy enough for royalty, but with a 0.8-litre two-cylinder engine, the little nipper won’t be able to build up enough speed to properly hurt himself. It also does an astonishing 313mpg, not that fuel consumption is likely to be an issue.

Unlike its Japanese counterparts, BMW has decided that it is going to make the electric car cool. Alongside the striking i8 supercar will be the i3, a compact hatchback with a choice of pure electric or hybrid drivetrains. The i3 will in fact be available to us mere commoners from the end of this month, priced at £25,680. Fast forward seventeen years and it will make a second-hand bargain, ideal for the young prince about town – provided the batteries haven’t given up the ghost by then.

Should young squire develop into a bit of a petrolhead, the Infiniti Emerg-E will fit the bill. It develops 402bhp and has individual motors powering each rear wheel, so it will provide plenty of thrills. And, thanks to low emissions, it will keep Prince Charles and his vague ramblings about the environment quiet – even though he drives a not-so-fuel-efficient Aston Martin Vantage.

London is one of the most congested cities in the world, and it’s not going to get any better in the next 17 years. As such, the new addition to the royal family may finding opting for something compact and streamlined to get around. The Toyota i-REAL would fit the bill, being extremely narrow and easy to park. It’ll even hit 18.6mph meaning the prince would be the fastest moving man in the Capital, though we’ll gloss over the fact that it looks like a robotic wheelchair.

Aston Martin CC100 Speedster
Like his grandfather (and most other people for that matter), the prince is likely to develop a soft-spot for classic open-top Aston Martins. By the time he gets his licence, the currently cutting edge CC100 Speedster is likely to be regarded just as old-school, with its 6.0-litre V12 engine likely to cause a stir on roads dominated by hydrogen and battery electric vehicles. Not that people will care, with a car this gorgeous, you could run over your neighbours dog and he wouldn’t even notice.
