Tesla has built its 1,000,000th car, according to boss Elon Musk.

The vehicle which hit the milestone is a red Model Y – a crossover version of the Model 3 saloon – rolling off the production line a few days ago.

Tesla was founded in 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Musk coming on board in 2004. The Californian company has taken 17 years get to its 1,000,000th example.

However, it shouldn’t take that long to get to the 2,000,000-car mark, with the manufacturer starting to build models at its third Gigafactory in China last year. A fourth plant is confirmed for Berlin.

The EV firm started production of its popular Model S in 2012, its Model X in 2015 and its Model 3 in 2017.

Tesla began building the Model Y this year, while a second-generation Roadster and the Cybertruck should both start the production process in the not-too-distant future.
