Subaru may be best known for its rally-inspired Impreza performance saloon, but the Japanese company has its eyes on the family car market with the new Levorg GT estate.
Due to arrive in UK showrooms in September, the Levorg was initially unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March. It’s the first estate car in the marque’s European line-up since the demise of the old Legacy Tourer in 2008.
The Levorg enters a highly competitive market and is likely to prove a niche choice, as it will be offered with just the one engine: an all-new 1.6-litre boxer unit that develops 168bhp. The 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit currently found in the Outback SUV is likely to be offered in due course, though Subaru has no plans to fit the Levorg with its powerful 296bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine in Britain.
Being a Subaru, drive is sent to all four wheels through the brand’s ‘Lineartronic’ CVT automatic gearbox – the only transmission option.
Price and specification details are yet to be confirmed, though a starting price of around £25,000 is expected, which will put the Levorg in the sights of talented rivals such as the Mazda 6 Tourer. In terms of kit, Subaru is promising a host of electronic safety aids, including blind spot monitoring and rear vehicle alert.
