Renault is famed for its rapid hot hatches that offer sports car performance and handling in compact hatchback packages. The Clio Renaultsport 200, though, changed the recipe, by growing in size and weight and coming with a standard-fit automatic gearbox – much to the chagrin of die-hard hot hatch driving fans.
Renault has updated the Clio Renaultsport range, however, with the addition of the more focused, more powerful and more expensive Clio Renaultsport 220 Trophy, which packs an additional 20bhp along with firmer sports suspension, sharper steering and grippy sports tyres, for even more impressive roadholding.
With a total of 217bhp the 220 Trophy doesn’t want for power, though the nought to 62mph only drops by 0.1 seconds over the standard car – down to 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed rises slightly from 143mph to 146mph, thanks to the added muscle.
Alongside updates to the chassis and suspension – which Renault hopes will make the car appeal to people who venture out on track days – the company has also tweaked the automatic gearbox to make it change gear more quickly and smoothly. Economy and emissions are improved too, with the car now offering claimed economy of 47.9mpg and emitting 135g/km of CO2, putting it into the £130 per year car tax band.
Appearing for the first time in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed – from June 25 to 28 – the Trophy gains carbon effect interior trim, satin chrome air vents and an embossed leather steering wheel to warrant the price increase over the standard car. Standard kit also includes a seven-inch touchscreen media system with sat nav, a digital radio, Bluetooth and uprated speakers, a handy reversing camera with sensors along with automatic lights and wipers.
Available to order now, the 220 Trophy costs £21,780, with the first models arriving with customers in August.
