A blanket ban on pavement parking could lead to thousands of motorists being left without a parking space, according to road safety charity IAM RoadSmart.

A ban on pavement parking across the board was suggested at a recent House of Commons Transport Committee enquiry. However, the charity has stated that an all-encompassing ban on parking on any area of pavement could cause a major headache for drivers across the country.

A statement from IAM RoadSmart said: “Where data [in favour of a ban] has been collated, the problems appear to be localised.

“Where pedestrians are being put in danger or denied access by inconsiderate pavement parking, or if costly long-term damage is being done, then we have no problem with local solutions being implemented for local problems.

However, IAM RoadSmart’s director of policy and research Neil Greig noted that, with more cars on the road, neither the road capacity nor budget exists for local councils to provide the extra spaces people need to park, or indeed, the resources required to implement a blanket ban.

“New traffic orders, new signposting, new road markings and new enforcement administration will all be required at extra cost if a blanket ban is introduced.

“Councils are already struggling to implement low-emission zones, cycling and walking policies, active travel policies, 20mph zones and a host of other transport measures against a background of budget cuts and dwindling resources.”

IAM Roadsmart also believes that a blanket ban risked creating conflict between residents as they attempt to find a place to park, often in areas where there hadn’t been a road safety problem related to parking previously.

And, as it is often the only option in some urban areas, with active encouragement to straddle the curb in certain instances, the charity has declared that it does not support the idea of a blanket ban overall.
