McLaren has announced optional gold badging for the upcoming Speedtail, the latest of the Woking-based firm’s Ultimate Series lineage of flagship cars.

All 106 examples of the Speedtail are spoken for, and all prospective owners are being given the option to add a bespoke McLaren front badge to their car, produced using 18-carat white gold and carbon fibre inlays.

The logo is being crafted by specialist firm Vaughtons, based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, and will weigh just 100 grams.

The three-seat, 243mph Speedtail will be the fastest McLaren road car ever, surpassing its spiritual predecessor, the F1. The bespoke badging option is itself a tribute to the F1, harking back to the famous use of gold foil in the engine bay, to act as a heat shield for the BMW-sourced V12.

Rob Lelville, McLaren Automotive’s design director said of the badges: “As beautiful pieces of exquisitely hand-crafted jewellery, the white-gold badges perfectly set off a car that in every way represents a new gold standard for McLaren luxury. They fit perfectly with the philosophy of the Speedtail, the most luxurious car in McLaren Automotive’s portfolio, as well as paying homage to its forebear, the McLaren F1.”

The Speedtail is set to produce over 986bhp via a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Each of the 106 customers for McLaren’s ‘Hyper-GT’ will have paid £1.75m plus local taxes for their Speedtail.

An official reveal for the McLaren Speedtail is scheduled for October 26th.
