Jaguar marks 70 years of sports cars with special edition F-Type

To mark 70 years since Jaguar’s famous XK 120 was revealed, the British firm has introduced a special ‘Chequered Flag’ edition of its F-Type sports car.

The Chequered Flag Edition is based on R-Dynamic trim, and will be offered as both a roadster and a coupe, while minor 2020 model year updates have also been announced for the machine.

Jaguar has remained reserved with the adjustments made to the special F-Type model, with subtle interior and exterior touches setting the car off from the standard model.

Windsor leather upholstery features in the interior with embossed headrests, as well as a brushed aluminium centre console and a small chequered flag appears on the steering wheel.

The special edition model comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, with coupe variants featuring a black roof.

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, said: “In creating the Chequered Flag we’ve focused on details which enhance F-Type’s presence and promise of performance – and in doing so, made a fitting celebration of 70 years of beautiful, fast, Jaguar sports cars.”

Chequered Flag cars receive a black styling pack, which comes with extended side sills, the aforementioned 20-inch wheels in gloss black, and red brake callipers.

The editions are available with either the 296bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol or the turbocharged 3.0-litre engine, producing either 345bhp or 375bhp in ‘S’ guise.

The original XK 120 first went on sale in 1948 and was Jaguar’s first sports car a we know them today. It was manufactured up until 1954, with over 12,000 being built in that time across three variants.

Jaguar has also announced slight model years updates for the rest of the F-Type range. The V8-powered F-Type R now features improved damping, alongside other small differences to the ball joints and upper control arm. These have come from adopting mechanicals of the range-topping F-Type SVR.

All F-Types come with a 10-inch touchscreen with a Meridian sound system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Spec improvements mean that a rear parking camera and front parking sensors are now fitted as standard.

F-Type Chequered Flag editions are available to order now, priced from £62,335 – roughly £10,000 more than the standard car.
