Intersection design to reduce congestion

An innovative new traffic system has been designed by researchers to work alongside autonomous technologies to reduce delays and pollution.

The Smart Autonomous Intersections design was created at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Senseable City Lab in conjunction with researchers from the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETHZ) and the Italian National Research Council (CNR).

Demonstrated in an animated video, the system would require the sensor-laden cars to communicate in their approach to the junction and moderate their speed in order to slot between vehicles travelling in other directions. The clever technology ensures that the vehicles maintain a safe distance from one another, and can also be designed to feature pedestrian and bicycle crossing points.

Graphs within the video show how this system reduces both congestion and delays in comparison with more conventional systems.
