Gamer vs Racer: Who wins?

July 2, 2014 | By | In News, Video

Last weekend saw the fun and games of the Goodwood Festival of Speed – an event that has morphed over the years from a hill-climb event for enthusiasts to the biggest event on the UK motoring calendar.

It has gone on to unofficially fill the boots of the long-gone UK motor shows, with a multitude of manufacturers unveiling new metal to the 200,000 strong crowd.

However, free from the constraints of regular motor shows, carmakers are free to be a bit more imaginative in revealing their new cars – as Ford proved when it revealed the facelifted Focus ST by launching it up the hill-climb in a race.

But not just any race; the manufacturer pitted the car – complete with ex-Stig Ben Collins at the wheel – against pro gamer Krisztian Somodi, who was sat in a virtual reality gaming chair, tackling a digital representation of the Goodwood hill-climb on the Gran Turismo 6 videogame.

Starting at the same time, eyes were fixed on both parties – though perhaps more so on the spectacle of a hot hatch being driven to its limit by a pro racing driver. We won’t spoil the result, but it was a very close call.
