Diesels could rise in popularity again as efficient Euro 6 models begin to enter the used car market.
Though slightly more expensive, Euro 6 diesel cars are among some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on sale today, and now they’re hitting used car dealerships as early models come off lease contracts.
Alex Wright, managing director of Shoreham Vehicle Auctions (SVA), said: “Despite the momentum behind electric vehicles, there is going to be a resurgence in demand for ultra-low emissions diesel powertrains.”
Ever since the Volkswagen ‘dieselgate’ scandal, diesel vehicles have received a public backlash and decreased in popularity. However, post September 2015, all diesels sold in the UK are required to be Euro 6 compliant.
Wright added: “We will see the diesel market recover and, due to the reduction in new diesel sales, the pendulum will swing back to an increased demand in the second-hand market.
“These vehicles will sit alongside EVs and fuel-efficient petrols as part of the solution in reducing emissions and improving urban air quality.”
In March of this year it was revealed that average CO2 emissions across all cars sold in Europe had reached a four-year high.
