The run-up to Christmas is expected to see more than 176,000 breakdowns on UK roads, a breakdown recovery organisation has revealed.

Green Flag is predicting there to be 176,200 breakdowns between December 18th and Christmas Day – the same as over 22,000 per day and more than 15 ever minute.

The breakdown service, as well as Highways England, are urging drivers to ensure their cars are in working order to avoid any unnecessary breakdowns, therefore keeping congestion to a minimum.

Simon Henrick, head of news at Green Flag, said: “With additional people out and about on the roads this Christmas, whether it’s to visit friends or family, or squeezing in the all-important last-minute Christmas shopping, we are encouraging drivers to carry out the relevant car safety checks to avoid car faults and breakdowns.”

In addition, the Green Flag’s study of more than 2,000 Brits uncovered that one in 10 people have left their shopping until the week before Christmas, while almost half (46 per cent) claim that they plan to drive to the shops – only 19 per cent said they’d take public transport.

Henrick added: “With the potential adverse weather conditions at this time of year, we advise only making long journeys if absolutely necessary.

“However, if a breakdown does occur, customers can rest assured as we operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
