BMW has revealed the third-generation model of its 1 Series.

The new car marks a significant change from its predecessor, with the German marque switching its hatchback to front-wheel drive.

The decision to deliver the car’s power to the front wheels has had an effect on many other elements of the design, such as a shorter bonnet and significantly more space – despite being shorter and only marginally wider.

As well as being roomier for all occupants, the interior has been designed to be driver-focused. The central control display touchscreen is angled towards the driver for convenience, and all of the controls relating to driving functions are clustered in one area of the dash.

A panoramic roof is available for the first time on the 1 Series, and is available with a trio of trims; base level SE, as well as Sport and M Sport. In addition, BMW is offering the range-topping M135i, which offers a sporting look, over 300bhp and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

SE comes with matt black air guide grilles on the front bumper, while Sport adds exclusive air inlets finished with a high-gloss black and a chrome-framed grille.

The M Sport features aerodynamic design accents, as well as satin aluminum struts in the kidney grille. Inside, the interior is upgraded with Dakota leather and contrast stitching.

The M135i xDrive incorporates the mesh-design BMW kidney grille and frame, exclusive front bumper air inlet clasps, and wing mirrors all finished in Cerium Grey.

A range of three diesel engines and two petrol engines is available for the 1 Series; the four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the M135i will be the most powerful, while the three-cylinder 116d will be the most economical choice, with a quoted fuel economy of 60.1-51.4mpg, dependent on driving conditions.

The new 1 Series is available to order now, with deliveries starting in September.

Meanwhile, the outgoing version of the BMW 1 Series is readily available here at Motors.co.uk.
