BMW 4 Series Convertible coming March 2014

October 16, 2013 | By | In News

BMW has released full price and specification details for its brand new 4 Series convertible, which goes on sale March 8 2014.

The 4 Series Convertible replaces the currently available 3 Series Convertible, with BMW electing to give two door variants its own model designation.

To differentiate it from its forbear, the 4 Series convertible is lower, longer and wider, which will not only pay dividends for the car’s handling, but also gives it a much more aggressive and sporting look.

Unlike its rivals from Mercedes and Audi, the 4 Series retains the folding metal roof introduced on the previous generation 3 Series. Providing better sound and heat insulation than a cloth hood, the roof can be raised and lowered in just 20 seconds, and at speeds of up to 8mph.

Otherwise, the styling of the 4 Series Convertible very closely follows that of the recently introduced Coupe model, with the same front-end styling (which varies depending on trim level) and a verbatim copy of its driver-oriented cabin.

At launch the Convertible will be available with a choice of two petrol and one diesel engine. Topping the range is the 3.0-litre, turbocharged 435i, which produces 303bhp – enough to get the car from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds. A smaller, four-cylinder petrol engine is also offered in the 428i. Developing 243bhp, it manages to get the 4 Series Convertible to 62mph from a standstill in a still respectable 6.2 seconds.

Likely to be of more interest to UK buyers is the 420d. It uses the 181bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine as found in the majority of BMW products on British roads. It’s a tad slower, taking 8.2 seconds to cover the benchmark sprint, but counters with 55.4mpg fuel economy and road-tax friendly CO2 emissions of just 127g/km.

Five trim levels are offered: SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and range-topping M Sport, with prices starting at £36,675 for an entry level 420d SE, and rising to £44,970 for a 435i in M Sport trim.

A hardcore M4 version is also likely to be offered, following the launch of the Coupe version next year.
