Audi unveils limited-edition motorsport-inspired R8 supercar

Audi has revealed a new limited edition R8, which is a motorsport-inspired model taking advantage of the firm’s range of aftermarket parts.

The Audi Sport Performance Parts R8 Edition will be limited to just 44 units, with just five making their way to the UK, and commanding a sharp price rise over the standard model.

Key differences over the normal R8 include full add-on extras from Audi Sport’s ‘Performance Parts’ range. The most noticeable of these is an aero kit – made from carbon-fibre – which adds a larger fixed rear spoiler and red rear diffuser, as well as Audi Sport side skirts and further aerodynamics added behind the wheelarches to help airflow. The cars are painted exclusively in Misano red.

Moving to the front, the kit also features a deeper splitter, more noticeable inlets and elements adopted from the original R8 GT. All this aerodynamic gear generates 100kg more downforce than the standard R8 V10 model.

Other differences include weight-saving lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. Adjustable coilovers and ceramic brakes are also fitted all round.

The interior is more reserved, although it features an Alcantara trimmed sports steering wheel which has a red 12 o’clock marker. On top of the R8’s standard equipment which includes Nappa upholstery, satellite navigation, online services and a digital Virtual Cockpit, the Audi Sport Performance Parts R8 edition benefits from a new smartphone interface, rear view camera and a sports exhaust.

Performance remains the same as the R8 Plus model, with its naturally-aspirated 5.2-litre V10 producing 602bhp and 560Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-60mph time of just 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 205mph.

The edition is priced from £176,560 – a steep jump in price over the Plus’s price of £141,200. Cars can be ordered from any of Audi’s 115 UK dealers although all are offered on a first come first served basis.
