Mercedes has unveiled plug-in hybrid variants of its A and B Class models.
The two electrified cars will be christened A250e and B250e, and will pair a 1.3-litre petrol engine with a 75kW electric motor and 15.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The result is a 215bhp powerplant that can propel the slightly smaller A Class from 0-60mph in just 6.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 146mph. The A Class will be capable of between 37 and 42 miles on electric power only.
Impressively, this means that the A250e will be able to return up to 188.3mpg.
The slightly larger B Class will be impressive too, taking 6.6 seconds to accelerate from 0-60mph while being capable of up to 176.5mpg.
Mercedes claims that charging from 10 per cent to 80 via a fast charger will take just 25 minutes.
Prices for the A250e are due to start at £32,500 for the hatchback and £33,100 for the saloon, while the B250e will be available from £33,700. Order books are expected to open in October, with first deliveries due to start early next year.
